Cookie Policy
This site asks before it measures anything. Nothing analytics-related loads until you choose, and if you say no, nothing is loaded at all — not loaded and ignored, not loaded.
The short version
- We use Google Analytics to see how the site is used. It loads only after you agree.
- Say no and no analytics cookie is ever set. The only thing stored is the record of your answer, so we stop asking.
- We have turned off the parts of Analytics that build advertising audiences or follow people between devices.
- You can change your mind at any time from Consent Preferences in the footer of any page.
- We honour the Global Privacy Control signal automatically. If your browser sends it, you are never asked and nothing is loaded.
1. What a cookie is
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so that it can recognise you or your device later. They are how a site remembers you are signed in — and also how advertising networks follow people between websites. Similar technologies do the same job by other means: local storage, tracking pixels, and browser fingerprinting.
2. What we use, and when
Two things, and only one of them is optional.
Strictly necessary — always on
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
qb_consent | Remembers the answer you gave to the banner, so we do not ask again on every page. It holds your choice, the date, and a random id that means nothing on its own. The same value is kept in your browser's local storage as a backup. | 1 year |
This one is not offered as a choice, because it is not one: without it the banner cannot remember that you answered it.
Analytics — only if you say yes
If you agree, we load Google Analytics 4, which sets these:
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
_ga | Tells one browser apart from another, so two page views can be counted as one visit rather than two people. | 2 years |
_ga_TYQJ5CCJ1H | Keeps track of the current visit for the same reason. | 2 years |
If you say no, neither is ever set. The script is not loaded and then told to behave — it is not loaded.
3. What we switched off
Google Analytics can do considerably more than count page views, and most of what it can do we have turned off. Specifically:
- Google Signals is off. This is the feature that ties what you do here to your signed-in Google account, to follow you across devices and build advertising audiences. It is switched off on the property, and the tag on our pages is also told not to use it — two locks, so that turning one off by accident does not quietly change what we collect.
- Advertising personalisation is off, by the same two locks. We do not build remarketing lists and we are not linked to a Google Ads account.
- Enhanced measurement is off. Analytics offers to record scroll depth, outbound clicks, file downloads, video engagement and site searches automatically. We record page views.
- Your IP address is not stored. Google uses it to work out an approximate location and discards it; Analytics 4 does not log IP addresses. We never see it.
- Visitor-level records are deleted after two months, the shortest period Analytics offers. Totals and trends are kept longer, because those are counts and not people.
4. Third parties a page load contacts
- Google Fonts serves the two typefaces the site is set in. Your browser fetches them from Google, which means Google receives your IP address and basic browser details as part of that request. It sets no cookie, and we receive nothing back. This happens whatever you choose about analytics, because it is how the page is drawn.
- Google Analytics, as described above, and only if you have said yes.
Links to our social media profiles are ordinary links. Nothing loads from those networks, and they do not know you visited, unless you click through.
5. Our calculators and quote tools
The calculators on this site run entirely inside your browser. What you type into them is never sent to us unless you ask us for a quote.
Our quoting and planning tools at tools.quote-bot.com carry the same banner, the same Analytics setup and the same switches as this site. Because that address is part of quote-bot.com, your answer here is your answer there — you are asked once, not twice, and a visit that moves between the two is counted as one visit rather than two.
6. Your controls
- Change your mind. Consent Preferences, in the footer of any page on either site, reopens the panel with your current setting showing. Turning analytics off stops it on the next page load.
- Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends this signal, we treat it as a no. You are not shown a banner, nothing is loaded, and we record that the choice was made by your browser rather than by you.
- Your browser. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies for any site in its settings.
- Google's own opt-out. Google publishes a browser add-on that blocks Analytics on every site that uses it, attools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
We do not respond to Do Not Track, because no agreed standard for it ever emerged. Global Privacy Control is the signal that replaced it, and we do honour that.
7. We keep a record of what you chose
When you answer the banner we store the answer on our side as well as in your browser: which option you picked, when, the wording you were shown, and the address you answered from, hashed so that it cannot be read back. This is kept as evidence that we asked and you answered — the same record that lets us honour a request to show what we hold about you.
8. Changes to this page
If we add anything that sets a cookie or measures behaviour, this page and the Privacy Policy change in the same release as the change itself — before it is live, not after. That is a commitment about sequence, and it is the one that matters: a policy saying a site does not track you, while the site does, is worse than no policy at all.
This page was last rewritten on the day analytics was switched on. Before that it said this site set no cookies at all, which was true at the time.
